WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Two new Geisinger urgent care centers will open in Luzerne County next week.
“Urgent care centers are the right choice if you or your children have an illness or injury that requires immediate care but is not serious enough to warrant an emergency room visit,” said Steven B. Pierdon, MD, chief medical officer for Geisinger Northeast. “Urgent care is a great option if your family doctor or pediatrician isn’t available but you are suffering from something minor, like the flu or a cold, earache, nausea or a sprain. It does not replace the emergency room in the case of a life-threatening illness or injury,” he said.
Pierdon said that Geisinger’s centers are designed to be convenient and accessible. The hours that the centers will be opened are:
- Urgent Care at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains opens Monday, Jan. 2. Enter through the Pearsall Heart Hospital entrance. Hours will be weekdays from 6 to 11 p.m. and weekends from 3 to 11 p.m.
- Careworks After-Hours Care in Mountain Top opens Friday, Jan. 6, in the Geisinger Medical Laboratory in the Weis Shopping Plaza. To start, the center will be open Monday and Friday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Beginning in February, the center will be open seven days a week.
Geisinger accepts nearly all major insurances.
“Convenience is really important when your children are sick or when you can’t miss work to see your doctor,” Pierdon said. “We also recognize that no one wants to wait in an emergency room unless they have a true emergency. Urgent care centers are perfect options.”
Geisinger also offers adult and pediatric urgent care services at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre as well as the Careworks After-Hours Care at Geisinger Medical Group-Dallas.
Opening the new clinics will add six new jobs in Plains and five new jobs in Mountain Top.
